Assisi is unmistakable, even from afar, for its pink stone and medieval appearance. The town is embraced by the basilicas of St. Francis and St. Clare which contain amazing works of art. Along the way you will discover its Roman history, its medieval fortifications, the charm of its alleys and the beauty of some views. The work and greatness of St. Francis are known throughout the world, but also other stories deserve to be known. During the second World War Assisi hosted thousands of displaced persons and hundreds of Jews were taken refuge in cloistered convents and in the homes of Assisi inhabitants. The Museum of Memory is live testimony to this.
For those who prefer the spiritual aspect the sanctuaries just outside the walls will take you to the slopes of Mount Subasio in a secular forest of holm oaks, where St. Francis gathered in silence in the embrace of Nature. Or go down to San Damiano among the olive trees to understand the life of Clare where the poor rooms bear witness to her great faith. For everyone, believers or non-believers, Assisi is the place to start from.
